Thanks in part to a healthy Mediterranean diet, Spaniards live longer and have lower obesity rates than Americans, an observable fact as here on a street in Madrid.

Perennial runner-up Spain performed a rockin' routine to Led Zeppelin and finally claimed gold in synchronized swimming, winning the free combination at the world championships Wednesday.

Taking advantage of Russia's absence, the Spaniards put together a high-energy routine that received scores ranging from 9.7 to 9.9 for a total of 98.333 points. China took the silver with 97.667 and Canada claimed the bronze with 96.167.

Six die in Spain tour-bus crash

A tour-bus has crashed near Barcelona in north-eastern Spain, killing at least six people and injuring about 40.

Most of the casualties were reported to be Dutch tourists.

The crash happened at about 2310 (2110 GMT) on Thursday at Sant Pol de Mar. Spanish media say the bus left the road on a bend, hit a car and overturned.

700 songs submitted in Spain

Already 700 entries have been submitted to the Spanish national selection, to their MySpace page.

The Spanish broadcaster TVE announced today that since opening the submission page already 700 entries have been sent it. Not all of them comply with the rules, though, they said. The most active region has been Madrid with 136 songs, followed by Barcelona with 53 and Valencia with 19.

TVE, the Spanish national broadcaster has received more than 700 entries so far in their quest to choose the 2009 Spanish Eurovision representative for Moscow in May. You still have until the 17th of December to submit your song and entry in order to compete in the Spanish national selection and thus represent Spain at the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest.

More than 700 entries have been submitted to the TVE Myspace Eurovision 2009: El Retorno, Spanish national selection so far in the past 2 weeks since it opened. More than 700 solo artists and groups have uploaded their song along with their presentation video. The number of entries submitted will surely grow as the deadline for the submission of songs in on the 17th of December.

Relatives seek to identify Spain crash victims

Grieving relatives on Thursday tried to identify charred bodies from the wreckage of a Spanish jet which crashed at Madrid airport on its second attempt at takeoff after mechanical problems.

Airline officials declined to comment on possible causes for Wednesday's crash in which 153 people were killed, but said Spanair Flight JK5022 had earlier been delayed due to a problem with the air intake heating system before it attempted a second takeoff for its flight to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands.

A new video of this week's Spanair plane crash showed that fire did not start in either of the plane's engines, as had been suggested earlier.

The video, taken by AENA, which runs Spain's airports, shows flight JK5022 take off and begin to climb before it crashes and bursts into flames.

Average Spanish property prices have fallen by 3.9% over 12 months to the end of July, according to the latest Spanish property price index published by Tinsa, one of Spain’s largest appraisal companies. Spanish property prices tracked by Tinsa have now fallen for 5 consecutive months.

Homes on the Mediterranean coast were the hardest hit by price declines, with average prices in coastal areas falling by 6.2%. The Canaries and the Balearics did better than coastal areas on the mainland, with prices down by just 2.8%.

The Spanish diva died at her home in La Moraleja in Madrid at 5,15 this morning. She was 61. Her family were at her side as she passed away.
She has now been taken to the Centro Cultural de la Villa, in the Plaza de Col�n in Madrid where the public will be able to pay their respects until 8pm this evening.
Family friends and admirers are paying their respects in ever increasing numbers. Among the famous to do so at the Centro Cultural today are, Carmen Sevilla, Majurita D�az, Concha Velasco, Marta Sanchez, Pedro Almod�var, Flores, Francisco, Ana Pastor, and Maria Teresa Campos among many many others. The coffin is closed and draped with both the Spanish and Andalucian flags.

Today is the 75th anniversary of the Second Republic in Spain, considered as the country’s first taste of democracy.
It began on April 14th 1931 after King Alfonso XIII had gone into exile and local elections resulted in Republican candidates winning the majority of votes in the urban areas.
A provisional government was set up under Niceto Alcal�-Zamora who immediately occupied the ministries, swept aside titles of nobility and confiscated the assets of the King.

The Mayor of Marbella, Marisol Yagüe, has been in court in Marbella today.
Firstly she had to give a statement to the magistrate Mar�a del Carmen Rodr�guez in Instruction Court Number One in the Copasur case. This relates to the accusations from the constructor Alberto Piñana, that the Mayor was intending to pay for work done at her private villa with municipal funds. Her home as been under a preventative embargo in the case for the last 20 days on accusations that a bill of 949,000 € for the work remains unpaid.
